railwayOn 22nd April 2026, Nanjing opened the 54.2 km S2 suburban rail line, comprising 16 stations, as the region’s first inter-provincial suburban rail line. The line connects the Xishanqiao terminus of metro line 7 in Nanjing with Taibai in the neighbouring city of Ma’anshan. Of the routing, 11.7 km runs through a tunnel, with the remainder above ground. The provinces of Jiangsu and Anhui implemented the project jointly and now manage the line together. The service is operated by 80 m long, four-car electric multiple units (EMU) of the Type B running on 1.5 kV DC with a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The EMUs are designed to be extended to six cars at a later date. A 11.3 km extension from Taibai to Baoshunlu, with a connection to monorail line 1 in Wuhu, is currently under consideration.
