railwayTwo of Victoria’s Big Build Rail projects have reached new milestones this month, with construction continuing at Boronia Station and a major signalling installation now complete at the new West Tarneit Station.
Boronia Station Upgrade
Works on the Boronia Station Upgrade are continuing, with the project set to deliver a safer and more accessible station precinct. The station closed temporarily in May to allow crews to begin widening the concourse and upgrading platform facilities, and it will remain closed until spring, with shuttle buses running between Bayswater, Boronia and Ferntree Gully stations to maintain rail connections in the meantime.
Crews have been using cranes to lift materials and equipment onto the platforms, including new passenger shelters and seating, toilets, lighting and sections of the upgraded passenger waiting room. In the coming months, work will continue on the new protective services officer building and access ramps, alongside external cladding and roofing on the new ticket office and foundations for the platform canopies. Lupton Way remains closed until late September while crews carry out drainage works, install retaining walls and build the new community plaza connecting the station forecourt with Dorset Road.
Once complete, the new station forecourt will feature a canopy inspired by flora from the nearby Dandenong Ranges, along with an expanded concourse improving connections over the rail line. The upgrade will also add more greenery across the precinct, with more than fifty new trees and around 3,000 plants and shrubs to be planted across the station area, Boronia Station Reserve and the new plaza between Dorset Road and the station.
West Tarneit Station
Crews have wrapped up a four-day, round-the-clock construction blitz to install rail signalling for the new West Tarneit Station, which will service Melbourne’s growing west. The new system will integrate the station into the rail network and ensure services can operate safely when it opens later this year.
With trains out of service during the blitz, crews also progressed work on the station platforms, cycling and pedestrian pathways, the station entrance, and the surrounding drainage channels, kerbs and pavement. More than 1.78km of new cabling was installed to support five new train signals and seven new train safety systems in Tarneit’s west.
The new station is expected to ease pressure on nearby Tarneit Station and improve access to transport for the local community. The precinct includes a four-bay bus interchange and a four-hundred-space car park on the southern side of the rail line, connecting to the northern side via a new pedestrian underpass and an accessible ramp. Landscaping will begin in the coming weeks, with the completed precinct set to feature seating and more than 17,000 native trees, plants, shrubs and grasses, including wattles, correas, bottlebrushes and flowering gum trees.
