Motorists are beginning to see the benefits of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade, with Stage 2a of the project nearing its halfway point along one of Geelong’s busiest growth corridors.

Boundary Road, between Barwon Heads and Harriott roads, reopened in early May after being closed since December 2025, marking the first time the intersection has been fully accessible since major construction began on the western side of the project.

A temporary roundabout has also been installed to help maintain traffic flow and improve safety while works continue.

During the closure, crews completed underground drainage and lighting upgrades, built new lanes on Barwon Heads Road and added turning lanes on Boundary Road.

The upgrades are designed to improve traffic flow and safety for the more than 35,000 motorists who use the corridor each day.

Construction is also continuing at the Parkfield Boulevard intersection in Charlemont and the Warralily Boulevard intersection in Armstrong Creek, with works expected to continue through to late May.

Once complete, traffic will switch onto newly built Barwon Heads-bound lanes between Reserve and Boundary roads, and Geelong-bound lanes between Boundary and Lake roads, including across the widened Armstrong Creek bridge.

When finished, Stage 2a will deliver additional lanes, upgraded intersections and new shared walking and cycling paths between Charlemont and Armstrong Creek.

The works build on improvements already completed as part of Stage 1 of the project.

Planning is also progressing for Stage 2b, between Lake and Lower Duneed roads, with construction expected to begin later in 2026.
