Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority
(L.A. Metro) earlier this month opened the first section of its D Line subway extension.
The new section extends west beyond the line's prior terminus in Koreatown through Hancock Park, Windsor Square, the Fairfax District and Cathay Circle into Beverly Hills. Riders can now get from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills in about 21 minutes, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release.
L.A. Metro also opened three new underground stations along the new section of subway: the Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. Each station is situated near entertainment and cultural institutions, and the stations are also adorned with large-scale, architecturally integrated artworks commissioned by the transit agency's Metro Art program, L.A. Metro officials said.
The second and third sections of the extension are slated to open next year, ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. At full buildout, the D Line will have stops in Westwood and the athlete village, making the extension a critical part of the city's games plan.
